FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Ted Chronopoulos scored two goals and the New England Revolution handed the Los Angeles Galaxy its first loss of the MLS season, 2-1 Wednesday night.
The victory gave New England (5-3-4) sole possession of first
place in the Eastern Division while Los Angeles (6-1-5) remained
second in the Western Division.
In the 40th minute, Chronopoulos took a centering pass from Imad
Baba and drove the ball home from 12 yards for a 1-0 lead.
The goal was set up by Johnny Torres, who found Baba on the
right side with a quick pass. Baba made a run to the end line
before steering a centering pass to an on-rushing Chronopoulos who
got past defender Zak Ibsen before putting the ball into the right
side of the net.
In the 70th minute, Chronopoulos made it 2-0 when he headed in a
corner kick by Mauricio Ramos.
Los Angeles scored in stoppage time when substitute Peter
Vagenas put in a low cross from Cobi Jones from 10 yards out. The
match was Vagenas' first appearance of the year.
The victory was the first against Los Angeles for New England
since June 8, 1997, when it won in a shootout at Foxboro Stadium.
The Galaxy were without Mexican star Luis Hernandez, who sprained his shoulder in his debut with the team on Saturday.
