SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Ronald Cerritos had a goal and an assist
and rookie goalkeeper Joe Cannon recorded his second shutout as the
San Jose Clash defeated the Chicago Fire 2-0 Sunday.
It was a successful debut for San Jose's new coach, Lothar Osiander.
Cannon made four saves in the first half, including one in the
12th minute when he deflected Dema Kovalenko's header from the top
of the 6-yard box.
Halftime substitute Dan Stebbins nearly scored for Chicago
(16-14) in the 54th minute but his shot hit the crossbar.
The Clash (18-12) took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute. Braeden
Cloutier hit a cross-field pass to Eddie Lewis, who passed to
Cerritos. Cerritos headed the ball past goalkeeper Greg Sutton.
Tinsley, acquired by the Clash in a June trade with Chicago,
scored in the 85th minute. Cerritos crossed the ball from the right
flank to Tinsley in front of the net and he sent it past Sutton
inside the far post.
