EIG sets record for unique users; 37 percent increase form August 1999

ESPN Internet Group (EIG), part of Walt Disney Internet Group (NYSE:DIG), generated record traffic in August, registering more than twice the number of page views of CNNSI.com, the SportsLine.com family of sites, and Fox Sports Online combined, according to recently released Media Metrix figures. In terms of traffic to its Olympics section, ESPN.com experienced twice as many unique visitors than its nearest general sports site competitor, according to research firm PC Data. According to the August Media Metrix survey:

  • EIG generated its highest number of monthly unique users ever -- 8.6 million, a 37% increase from August 1999 and a 16% increase from last month alone; EIG's previous unique user record was 8.2 million in October 1999;
  • In terms of total page views, EIG accounted for 68.2% of all page views generated by EIG, the SportsLine.com family of sites, CNNSI.com and Fox Sports Online. EIG generated 368.7 million page views, more than twice that of its nearest THREE competitors combined (171.8 million);
  • ESPN.com', EIG's flagship site, saw its users spend an average of 51 minutes per month on the site, a number greater than its two nearest competitors combined - 26 minutes for the SportsLine.com sites and 16.7 minutes for CNNSI.com.

    According to PC Data, for the week ending September 16:

  • ESPN.com's Olympics section (http://espn.go.com/oly/summer00/index.html) received 593,000 unique users, more than the Olympic sections of Yahoo!, CNNSI.com, USA Today and SportsLine combined.
