How to make first base disappear
| | Resident magician Lloyd McClendon demonstrates his amazing sleight of hand. |
This trick is guaranteed to bring the crowd to its feet but it is easily performed with a minimum of special props.
First, wait until you catch a dozing umpire miss a call at first base. Then race onto the field and deliver your carefully prepared "patter," insisting that the umpire is screwing your team because it is in last place. Be sure and sprinkle in a few "magic words" for effect. Kick dirt and toss your cap to second base in a standard misdirection sleight of hand. While the audience is distracted, quickly reach down and remove first base, take it under your arm and slip quietly into the dugout runway. The audience will be stunned when they realize that first base has disappeared.
With a little practice, you'll be ready to perform this trick in public. Good luck, but remember to save it for your final act of the night -- the umpires may eject you!
