Thorpe on 'standby' for final relay

SYDNEY, Australia -- Ian Thorpe, whose three golds have electrified the host nation, has an upper respiratory infection, an Australian swimming spokesman said Thursday.

"He's got a bit of a sniffle," Ian Hanson said. "He was in training this morning. It's nothing he wants to use as an excuse."

Thorpe, 17, is not being kept away from the rest of his teammates, Hanson said.

Thorpe has been bothered by the infection since Wednesday, when the swimmer appeared in good health at a news conference, Hanson said. Thorpe had the night off and joined the rest of his team to watch the finals.

He won golds in the 400-meter freestyle and the 400 and 800 freestyle relays, along with a silver in the 200 freestyle.

He may be chosen to swim on Australia's 400 medley relay team. Preliminaries are Friday, followed by the final Saturday.

"Technically, I'm not finished swimming," Thorpe said Wednesday. "I'm on standby. There's a possibility I'll be on the medley relay, so I'm not finished at the pool yet. I'm trying to stay in contact with the water."
