Australia's Mark misses mark in end

SYDNEY, Australia -- Richard Faulds of Britain won the men's double trap in a shootoff with defending gold medalist Russell Mark of Australia.

Renata Mauer-Rozanska of Poland won the gold medal in the women's 50-meter rifle, again denying world-champion Sonja Pfeilschifter an Olympic medal.

Mark, the 1996 Atlanta double trap champion, led through most of the competition Wednesday, but faltered in the final regulation round and the playoff, taking silver.

Fehaid Al Deehani of Kuwait won the bronze with a score of 186.

After breaking his Olympic record with 143 points in the qualifying round, Mark missed both targets in the last round of the finals to allow Faulds to tie at 187. In the first round of the shootout, Mark and Faulds each hit one of two targets. Mark also was 1-for-2 in the second round, but Faulds nailed both to capture the gold.

Lance Bade, of Vancouver, Wash., reached the final round of the double trap with a qualifying score of 136 and finished sixth with 179.

Australia's Michael Diamond, who won his second successive Olympic gold in the single trap, failed to make the qualify for the final Wednesday.

Mauer-Rozanska, the 1996 Olympic champion in the 10-meter air rifle, won the 50 meter with 684.6 points.

Tatiana Goldobina of Russia won the silver with 680.9 and Maria Feklistova of Russia scored 679.9 to take the bronze over Pfeilschifter, the reigning world champion who made her Olympic debut at the 1992 Games.

Pfeilschifter, of Germany, was fourth in the women's event, scoring 678.5 points, after a fifth-place finish Saturday in the 10-meter air rifle.

Mauer-Rozanska was tied with Pfeilschifter and Goldobina after the qualifying round, but won with 99.6 points in the eight-woman final. Melissa Mulloy, of Middleton, Mass., made the finals and was eighth with 673.7.
