Since taking over as general manager in '95-96, Mike Milbury hasn't really dealt with a stable ownership group. But now, things are different on Long Island. With new owners in place, Milbury looked like Monty Hall over the summer, wheeling and dealing with anybody and everybody. Milbury is trying to improve a club which finished with the third-worst record (24-49-9) in the league last season.

He began rebuilding by making history at the draft, choosing Boston University goaltender Rick DiPietro with the No. 1 pick -- the first time in league history that a netminder has been taken first overall. Then, Milbury stunned everyone by sending his other goaltender of the future -- Roberto Luongo -- to Florida along with center Olli Jokinen in exchange for forwards Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha. Milbury then acquired veteran John Vanbiesbrouck from the Flyers to help ease DiPietro's transition from college to the pros. Kevin Weekes? Why, he's been dealt too.

Question: Will offense be better?
The Isles finished with 194 goals last season -- only expansion Atlanta had fewer. Parrish will battle for playing time on the club's second line, centered by either Mats Lindgren or Dave Scatchard. Mike Stapleton might get a crack at the No.2 center slot. The first line is set with Tim Connolly centering Brad Isbister and Mariusz Czerkawski.

Some surprises to look for in training camp include center Jason Krog and left wing Taylor Pyatt. Pyatt is only 19, but the goal-starved Isles are going to give him a good shot to make the club in camp. He scored 40 goals in 68 games for Sudbury of the OHL last season.

Biggest position battle: No. 1 goalie
On draft day, Milbury was only half-joking when he said DiPietro might be his starting goaltender this season. The general manager's beliefs regarding the young netminder were confirmed when he dealt Luongo and Weekes. The guess here is that DiPietro will get every opportunity to battle veteran Vanbiesbrouck for the No. 1 spot in camp.If the rookie falters, look for Vanbiesbrouck to play on a full-time basis.

Raffi Torres (Left wing):
The Islanders traded up with Tampa last June to select Torres fifth overall. Torres is solid (5-foot-11, 210 pounds) and can score. In 68 games playing for Brampton of the OHL last season, Torres -- who was born just outside of Toronto to parents of Hispanic heritage -- notched 43 goals and amassed 91 points.
