McCarty signs new $1.95 million contract

Associated Press

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The Detroit Red Wings re-signed forward Darren McCarty to a one-year, $1.95 million contract.

The deal with the restricted free agent was reached a day before McCarty and the Wings prepared to open training camp on Friday.

McCarty, 30, earlier had turned down a contract with those terms, and was talking with the team about a multiyear deal. But general manager Ken Holland and McCarty's agent, Pat Morris, couldn't reach one.

``We obviously want to do a long-term deal,'' Holland said. ``We just weren't able to get anything done. Over the course of the winter, we can talk further.''

McCarty, eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer, had five goals in 62 games last season and four goals in 23 playoff games during the Red Wings run to the Stanley Cup title.
