DENVER -- The Colorado Avalanche began training camp at home Wednesday after a somber return from Sweden following the terrorists attacks.
Players and coaches for the Stanley Cup champions reunited with their families Monday, arriving in Denver on a charter flight.
"Most of the guys here have wives and kids, so coming back home was really nice," forward Alex Tanguay said. "We don't know what's going to happen. If there was to be a war or something like that, everybody wants to be with their loved ones."
While in Sweden the Avalanche learned star forward Peter Forsberg will be taking an indefinite leave. Forsberg had surgery to remove his ruptured spleen during the playoffs in May and had surgery on both ankles this summer.
"I really believe a person has to be at peace with himself," coach Bob Hartley said. "Right now, if he's sore or mentally he's not ready to compete on a daily basis, then we have to support this.
Hartley said the Avalanche accomplished most of their goals in Sweden.
"We were able to accomplish quite a bit, and I'm pretty satisfied where we're at with our training camp right now," he said.
The Avalanche play twice at home this weekend, against Dallas on Saturday and Phoenix on Sunday. |
