Salo signs for 3 years, plus 2 option seasons

EDMONTON -- Goaltender Tommy Salo signed a three-year, $10.4 million contract extension with the
Edmonton Oilers through the 2003-04 season, it was announced Thursday.

Salo is making $1.8 million this season, and the Oilers have an option for
an additional two seasons.
Salo, 29, has started 12 of Edmonton's 14 games this season and
is 6-4-2 with a 2.55 goals-against average and an .896 save
percentage. He recorded his 100th career win with 23 saves in a
3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 13.
A native of Sweden, Salo was acquired by Edmonton from the New
York Islanders in March 1999. Since joining the Oilers, Salo
has appeared in 95 regular-season games with a 41-34-17 record,
two shutouts and a 2.71 GAA.
Salo was the lone representative for the Oilers at the 50th
annual NHL All-Star Game in Toronto last season, earning the win for the
World Team.
A fifth-round pick of the Islanders in the 1993 draft, Salo has
a career record of 103-128-38 and 2.63 GAA with 16 shutouts in
282 games.
Salo has represented Sweden seven times in international
competition, including two Olympic Games and three world
championships. He was a member of Sweden's first ever Olympic
gold medal team in 1994 at Lillehammer, Norway, stopping five
Canadian shooters in the overtime shootout of the championship
game.
