| | UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Things were not much calmer around the New Jersey Devils the day after coach Robbie Ftorek was fired.
Prior to Friday night's game against the New York Islanders, New Jersey general manager Lou Lamoriello announced that newly acquired defenseman Deron Quint was sent home for conduct detrimental to the team.
"The only comment I'll make on Quint is that it was for disciplinary reasons," Lamoriello said. "There was no criminal or legal situation involved. In my mind, his actions away from the ice were not conducive to what I feel is right -- especially for a newcomer."
Lamoriello said that Quint's career with the Devils is over after just four games.
"I'll trade him over the summer," Lamoriello said. "He's a Group II restricted free agent."
Quint, who had one goal and two penalty minutes with the Devils, was acquired from Phoenix on March 7 for popular defenseman Lyle Odelein.
Quint, a 24-year-old former second-round draft choice, scored three goals and assisted on seven others in 50 games this season with the Coyotes.
Lamoriello also announced that Bob Carpenter has been called up to serve as an assistant to new coach Larry Robinson. Carpenter, a former Devils player, has been working as an assistant with New Jersey's AHL affiliate in Albany.
Carpenter's promotion was influenced by Robinson.
"He'll help us out," Lamoriello said. "When he played here, he excelled in two areas: penalty killing and faceoffs. But he'll help out Larry in whatever way he wants."
Lamoriello fired Robbie Ftorek on Thursday even though the Devils still have the best record in the Eastern Conference and third-best overall in the NHL.
The Devils, who have lost 10 of 16, entered Friday's game with a two-point lead over Philadelphia in both the Atlantic Division and the race for the top seed in the conference. | |
