TORONTO (AP) -- Toronto put the bad memories of their previous
game against New Jersey behind them.
Jonas Hoglund scored twice in the third period as the Maple
Leafs defeated the Devils 5-3 Thursday night.

The game was the first between the teams since the Devils
eliminated the Maple Leafs from the playoffs with 3-0 victory in
Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals en route to the Stanley
Cup title. Toronto only managed an NHL record-low six shots in that
game.
"I know I didn't play my best series against New Jersey,"
Hoglund said. "It's over with. We played great tonight. We really
wanted to win this game. You could see in the eyes of everybody."
Hoglund, criticized for Toronto's poor showing in the series,
deflected Danny Markov's shot from the point to give the Maple
Leafs a 4-3 lead with 8:35 remaining. Hoglund crashed the net and
scored again at 19:03.
"Nothing needed to be said tonight," Corson said. "It was an
important game for us."
Toronto's Yanic Perreault tied it 3-3 in the third after skating
in alone and flicking the puck past goalie Martin Brodeur at 6:00.
Moments later, Chris Terreri replaced Brodeur, who left the game
with a strained groin.
"My leg just gave out on me," Brodeur said. "It's not the
first time I've felt pain like that in my groin. I'm sure it will
be fine in a couple of days."
John Madden scored twice for the Devils, who saw their six game
unbeaten streak end.
Corson scored on a wraparound to give Toronto a 1-0 lead at 6:56
of the first.
Madden tied it at 13:23 of the first after stealing the puck
from Sergei Berezin, firing a shot, collecting the rebound and
shooting it past goalie Curtis Joseph.
Madden was alone in front of the net when he made it 2-1 at 2:20
of the second.
Alexander Mogilny snapped a wrist shot from the top of the right
faceoff circle past Joseph 2:34 later to give the Devils a 3-1
advantage.
"There's no quit in this group," Toronto coach Pat Quinn said.
"We were really tense early on. We weren't executing in any area,
but then all of a sudden we started to move the puck well against a
good defensive team."
Cory Cross scored a power-play goal at 9:10 to cut it to 3-2.
Game notes
Singer Judy Collins was booed for difficulties during the
Canadian national anthem. ... Madden, who scored four times in a
9-0 victory last week at Pittsburgh, has seven goals this season.
... Corson scored his first goal with Toronto. ... Hoglund has four
goals. ... The Devils had just three shots in the third period.
