ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- After getting a one-hour lecture behind closed doors from coach Craig Hartsburg about tightening up their defense, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks put his words into action. Anaheim held the Phoenix Coyotes to just two shots in the third period and 16 overall, while Oleg Tverdovsky scored with 14:10 left in regulation for a 1-1 tie. "Lately we've been giving up 30 shots a night. But tonight, the forwards did a great job of closing up the neutral zone and getting back defensively," Tverdovsky said. Teemu Selanne and Coyotes defenseman Keith Carney were vying for the puck along the boards in the Phoenix zone when referee Mike Leggo signaled a delayed penalty against Carney. Matt Cullen took possession and sent a cross-ice pass to Tverdovsky, who beat Sean Burke low to the glove side with Anaheim's 22nd shot. It ended Burke's scoreless streak at 132 minutes, 33 seconds, and spoiled his bid for a second consecutive shutout. "I don't think it was one of Oleg's hardest shots, but when you put pucks on net, something's guaranteed to happen. And that's an example right there," teammate Steve Rucchin said. "Burke made some harder saves than the one that got by him." Burke, NHL player of the month in October with a 7-1-1 record and 1.54 goals-against average, made 25 saves in his first outing of November. The Coyotes used Brad May's second-period goal to extend their unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3). Phoenix, which went almost nine minutes before getting its first shot on net, had only one in the second period until May scored his third goal at the 7:58 mark. "It was a very hard-fought game, and we had good solid effort defensively against the best team in the league right now," Hartsburg said. The puck hopped over Anaheim goalie Guy Hebert's stick as he tried to play it behind the net. Landon Wilson got possession in the left corner and made a perfect centering pass to May, who one-timed it past Hebert's stick from left of the crease. "Nobody was with me. It was unbelievable," May said. "I kind of went into the zone slowly, and Landon made a great play. If he doesn't make that pass quickly, it wouldn't have happened. It worked out good for us." Playing on the road for the sixth time in seven games, the Coyotes stretched their road unbeaten streak to seven despite getting outshot 26-16. They have been held to fewer than 20 shots in four of their last six contests -- including Monday night's 4-0 victory at Colorado, when the Avalanche held a 45-16 advantage. "In the first period, I think we missed about five or six shots from point-blank range on the power play and we had some shots blocked," May said. "But there's no question we've got to get more shots." Game notesDuring their 10-game unbeaten streak, the Coyotes have taken 110 fewer shots on net than their opponents. ... Anaheim captain Paul Kariya failed to record a goal or an assist for the first time in 10 games. ... The Ducks were 0-for-6 on the power play, only the third time in 14 games this season they have failed to capitalize with the advantage. ... Burke is the first Phoenix player to be named player of the month since goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov. ... Only two goalies since the 1990-91 season have recorded more saves in a shutout than the 45 stops Burke posted in Monday's 4-0 victory at Colorado. Curtis Joseph stopped 52 shots in a scoreless tie with Detroit on Dec. 10, 1996, and Patrick Roy made 46 saves against Hartford on March 25, 1997. ... The only goalie this season who has faced more shots than Burke is Hebert (393-305). Hebert has played 65 more minutes than Burke. ...
