SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Vincent Damphousse gives the San Jose Sharks an added dimension, and Owen Nolan and Jeff Friesen are taking advantage.
Damphousse scored two goals and had an assist as the San Jose Sharks defeated Phoenix 6-3 Wednesday night to extend their unbeaten streak to four games. Nolan took over the league in points with a goal and three assists. Friesen added a goal and two assists for the Sharks, who have beaten the Coyotes four straight times. "Damphousse is their key player," said Coyotes coach Bob Francis. "He's exactly what Friesen and Nolan needed. They had power and speed, now they've got someone who can see and find the goal. He gave them a completely different look last year and it's carried over to this year." Travis Green, Mika Alatalo and Rick Tocchet scored for Phoenix, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Sharks goaltender Steve Shields recorded his league-leading ninth victory of the season, stopping 37 shots. "Your goaltender needs to be good in the traffic so there aren't second and third chances," said San Jose coach Darryl Sutter. "There weren't. He stopped the first shot and covered it or sent it to the defense." San Jose, tied with the Los Angeles Kings for first place in the Pacific Division at 21 points, is also tied for the most wins in the league with Toronto (10). The Sharks scored five goals on their first 13 shots. The Coyotes outshot San Jose 40-20. "It's been awhile since we opened it up like that and scored some goals," said Damphousse. "We didn't get a lot of shots, but we were sharp around the net." Damphousse's second goal of the game, at 10:37 of the second period, put the Sharks ahead to stay. As Damphousse skated down the left side, Friesen led him with a perfect pass toward the slot. Damphousse then tipped it past Phoenix goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov, who hasn't beaten the Sharks in five career appearances. Patrick Marleau scored at 14:42 of the second period. He was standing in the slot and one-timed it past Shtalenkov. Ronnie Stern scored less than two minutes later. Green gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead with his 10th goal of the season at 13:24 of the first period. It was the first even-strength goal allowed by Shields in 133:24, spanning 2½ games. "Shields played a great game," said Green. "He takes up a lot of room. We poured it on in the third. He was the big difference." Shields turned away all 17 shots he faced in the third period. "He's a great goalie and he's been playing well for them," said Coyotes' Shane Doan. "As the game wore on, he seemed to get stronger." Nolan tied the game less than a minute later with his 10th goal. Damphousse won a faceoff in the Coyotes' zone and Nolan one-timed it from the bottom of the left circle. "We have a great offensive team here," said Nolan. "We don't panic. Anytime you have a goalie like Shields, you know the outside shots aren't going in." After Alatalo gave Phoenix a 2-1 lead at 18:36, Damphousse tied it again just 23 seconds later. He was in front of the net and tipped in a pass from Nolan. "Damphousse and those guys are one of the top lines in the league," said Doan. "You give them any chances and they'll score." Tocchet's goal came with 24 seconds left in the second period.
Friesen added an empty-net goal with 1:24 remaining, his eighth
goal of the season.
