UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- Eric Fichaud found revenge, Jeff O'Neill found the scoresheet and the Carolina Hurricanes found themselves with two points. Fichaud stopped 24 shots against his former team and O'Neill had a goal and three assists as Carolina beat the New York Islanders 4-0 on Saturday night. "I couldn't ask for a better scenario," Fichaud said. "First and most important was the win. Next was the shutout. And then finally, against these guys." Fichaud made only his second start of the year. He stopped 15 shots in a 4-1 win at Vancouver on Oct. 15. Carolina coach Paul Maurice noted Fichaud's solid play, but said there would be no goaltender controversy on his team. "Fich has given up one late goal in his two starts, and he's been solid," Maurice said. "But Arturs Irbe doesn't have to worry about losing the No.1 job." The Islanders just worried about another loss, their sixth in nine games (2-6-1). Goalie Felix Potvin was New York's best player, making 27 saves, four of them spectacular. Carolina's first goal came at 8:43 of the opening period, the only non power-play goal in the game. O'Neill won a draw in the right circle back to Sean Hill at the point, and Hill fired a slap shot that deflected off an Islander and past Potvin. Sami Kapanen made it 2-0 at 14:59 on a wrist shot from just outside the left crease. David Tanabe made it 3-0 71 seconds into the second period with a tap-in after taking a pass from O'Neill. O'Neill added a power-play goal with 6:41 left in the game on a fine cross-ice pass from Kapanen. "Our special teams were big for us tonight," Maurice said. "To get three power-play goals and kill five penalties is great. We also made safe and intelligent plays all night long, especially in the third period." O'Neill felt it was just a case of the puck bouncing his way. "I won a contest to be (teammate) Ron Francis for a day," O'Neill said. "Things kind of went right for me tonight. A few bounces went my way." Fichaud's only other career shutout also came at Nassau Coliseum on April 6, 1996 when he wore an Islander uniform in beating Buffalo 3-0. "It's special to go back to where you started your NHL career," Fichaud said. The Islanders have the fewest points in the league (5), and forward Mariusz Czerkawski said that the players needed to refocus on playing within a system. "We were prepared, but didn't execute the way we should," Czerkawski said. "After we gave up those first two goals, we didn't stick to the game plan. It was like everybody was working in their own system. We have to be more smart. There's no time for excuses."
