VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- With Grant Fuhr gaining his 399th NHL victory, the Calgary Flames finally put one in the win column.

Fuhr stopped 27 shots and picked up the win when Valeri Bure scored with 1:55 left in overtime to lift the Flames to a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Mark Messier and the Canucks couldn't keep Steve Dubinsky's Flames away from the net in overtime Wednesday.
The Flames had three losses and a tie in their previous four games. The Canucks lost their first game of the season after three victories.

Fuhr was pleased that the young Flames team won its first game in five tries this season.

"I think it's pretty big. The guys have worked hard and stayed with it. To finally get some results out of it is going to do wonders for our confidence," Fuhr said.

Ranked sixth on the all-time wins list, Fuhr is now eight victories behind former St. Louis great Glenn Hall.

Fuhr, 37, is shooting for 450 wins.

"Yeah, I think I might hang around that long," he said.

The Flames, who acquired Fuhr in an offseason deal with St. Louis, credit their veteran goaltender for giving them confidence.

"It feels safe," Bure said. "Sometimes you make a mistake and know that Grant's back there, (and) you can kind of ease it off. He's been great for us."

Bure, who has a point in all five Calgary games, found himself alone in front of the Vancouver net on the game-winning goal.

Set up by Marc Savard's pass from the corner, Bure got a couple of whacks at the puck before finally managing to flip it over goalie Garth Snow.

"I really didn't have time to think about it," said Bure, referring to how wide open he was on the game-winning goal. "I just kept swinging at it and hoped nobody would hit me from behind. It happened."

Savard, back in the lineup after being benched in Monday's 3-3 tie against Carolina, set up two goals while Cory Stillman scored twice. Andrei Nazarov also scored for the Flames, who improved to 1-3-1.

Andrew Cassels and Alexander Mogilny had a goal and an assist each for the Canucks, who blew an opportunity to match their best start in franchise history. They went 4-0 to open the 1992-93 season. Markus Naslund also scored for the Canucks while Peter Schaefer had two assists.

"It wasn't our best effort of the year," said Canucks coach Marc Crawford. "What we have to do is get our game to a level and then keep it at a level. And we weren't at that level tonight. ... I think we regressed a little tonight, although we had moments."

Defensive miscues scuttled the Canucks.

Veteran defenseman Doug Bodger allowed Savard to strip him of the puck to set up Nazarov's goal. And then there was the Canucks failing to cover the front of the net on Bure's goal.

The game was played before an all-time low crowd of 12,693 since GM Place opened in September 1995.

The Flames appeared to take control of the game when they scored two straight to take 3-2 lead. Stillman scored his second of the night and fourth of the season on the power play 65 seconds into the second period.

Cassels, playing against his former team, tied it by banging in his own rebound with 5:35 left in the second period.

The Canucks finished the game going 2-for-5 in power-play chances. The Flames went 2-for-3 with the man advantage to improve to 6-for-19 for the season.

Calgary, which entered the night outscored 16-8 by its opponents, managed two first-period goals, the first time the team has scored in the opening 20 minutes this season.

"We're starting to get some breaks as far as goals going in," said Flames coach Brian Sutter.
