Shutout win no sweat for Brodeur

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- It was a relatively quiet night for New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur.

Following a tumultuous 7-5 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, Brodeur only had to make 14 saves Saturday night en route to a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"It was a good game for us coming back from a bad loss," said Brodeur, who was ejected for slashing Matthew Barnaby in the wild Pittsburgh game. "It was nice to see all the guys bearing down defensively. We made it our mission to do well in our own end tonight."

The game against the Lightning was almost like a night off as Brodeur recorded his 37th career shutout.

Brian Rolston scored the only goal Brodeur needed as the Devils dominated most of the game. It was Brodeur's third career shutout of Tampa Bay and the seventh time he was on the winning end of a 1-0 score.

The Devils beat the Lightning for the 11th straight time at Continental Airlines Arena by controlling the game from start to finish.

"I thought we took it to them the majority of the time," Rolston said. "Tonight we had a ton of opportunities to score. Some nights they're going to go in for you. The important thing was that we stayed tight defensively."

The Lightning's best scoring chance came with three minutes remaining and Tampa Bay on the power play. Chris Gratton unloaded a hard shot from the blue line that handcuffed Brodeur. He recovered quickly to knock aside the rebound.

The Devils dominated throughout the first two periods, yet led only 1-0. New Jersey outshot Tampa Bay 13-4 in the first and 15-3 in the second.

Dan Cloutier, making his debut for the Lightning, successfully held off the Devils pressure until 7:06 of the second period.

Petr Sykora took a hard shot from the top of the right circle. Cloutier made the save but was off balance and out of position as Rolston knocked in the rebound.

"Petr got a great shot on net and the rebound was just sitting there for me," Rolston said. "He was down and I flipped it over him."

Lightning coach Steve Ludzik did not fault his team's effort despite the wide disparity in shots.

"We competed as hard as we could tonight," he said. "Our defensemen are making mental mistakes at crucial times that are hurting our team. It's going to happen until we get them ground down to perfection."
