SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- A wild late-game brawl overshadowed a franchise-record scoring feat by San Jose teammates Owen Nolan and Jeff Friesen.
Nolan and Friesen each scored three goals, and Nolan added three assists as the Sharks defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 7-1 Monday night. It was the first time in San Jose's nine-year history that two Sharks recorded hat tricks in the same game. But that accomplishment was almost forgotten after Chicago's Mark Janssens charged into Sharks goalie Steve Shields with 1:15 left, triggering a brawl involving all 12 players on the ice and one from the bench. A total of 84 penalty minutes were assessed, including game misconducts to Janssens and Bob Probert of Chicago, and San Jose's Shields, Alex Korolyuk, Patrick Marleau and Brantt Myhres. "It's a 6-1 game and a guy is going to run me?" Shields asked. "I'm going to stand my ground. Someone comes up and hits me in the back of my head and my temper switch just went off and I came up swinging." Chicago goalie Steve Passmore tried to join in, but was restrained by Korolyuk. Meanwhile, separate fights broke out all over the ice. As Shields was leaving the ice, Probert reached over the bench and hit him in the face with his stick. Shields needed four stitches to close a cut on his lip, but no other serious injuries were reported. "It's one of those situations where you've got a guy like Brantt Myhres who gets into it early with a guy like Doug Zmolek and there's nothing wrong with that," said Chicago coach Lorne Molleken. "But from that point on you've got tempers boiling over and all it takes is a little collision in the crease to get things going." Nolan was upset that Janssens went after Shields. "If you're going to fight, you should at least fight players and not goalies," Nolan said. The Sharks are 2-0 for the first time in their history. Eric Daze scored for the Blackhawks, who were playing their season opener. Nolan got his 10th career hat trick and his six points set a San Jose record. Friesen recorded his second career hat trick. The Sharks also set a franchise record with four power-play goals. Vincent Damphousse had four assists and Gary Suter, who missed all but one game last season because of an elbow injury, added two assists for the Sharks. Daze picked up a loose puck in front of the net and slipped it through Shields' legs with 17:28 left in the first period to give the Blackhawks the early lead. Nolan scored his first two goals during a 1:06 span in the first period. With San Jose skating with a two-man advantage, Suter passed the puck from the blue line to Nolan on the left side. Nolan's shot slipped past goalie Jocelyn Thibault to the stick side at 6:12. Just over a minute later, Damphousse made a perfect pass from the right corner to Nolan, who beat Thibault from the far side of the crease. Friesen, who has led the Sharks in scoring the last two years, got his first goal of the season with 45 seconds remaining in the first period. Nolan's shot glanced off a defenseman's skate and Friesen tapped the puck into an open net. Friesen scored two more goals in the third period. Nolan completed his hat trick midway through the second period. He took a shot that bounced off Thibault's chest into the air. Chicago defenseman Bryan McCabe tried to hand save it, but instead knocked it past Thibault. "Last year was all about bad luck," said Nolan, who scored only 19 goals last season. "I couldn't buy an empty-net goal or get one to go in. This year, they're ricocheting off players and I'm getting hat tricks."
