Flames end seven-game losing streak

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- The Calgary Flames fell behind early, and looked to be on their way to their seventh consecutive loss.

Instead, the Flames fought back from a two-goal deficit and beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 Sunday night.

"It was so early in the game that we felt we wouldn't have any trouble coming back," Calgary's Jason Wiemer said. "Obviously, the way things have been going lately, it could've been 'Here we go again.' But it wasn't."

Wiemer scored at 8:09 of the third period, capping the Flames' comeback in a game that featured five power-play goals.

Wiemer back-handed a rebound over the pad of Edmonton goalie Tommy Salo on a power play after Salo stopped Phil Housley's shot from the slot.

Roman Hamrlik opened the scoring for Edmonton 2:48 into the game, his 100th point as an Oiler, and Ryan Smyth extended the lead 63 seconds later with his 100th NHL goal.

"We knew we needed this game tonight," Calgary's Jarome Iginla said. "Being down 2-0, nobody hung their heads on the bench and we got a big bounce at the end of the first."

That bounce was Robyn Regehr's point shot that went in off Edmonton defenseman Igor Ulanov with just four seconds remaining in the opening period to tie it 2-2. Iginla scored Calgary's first goal at 12:55 of the first.

"Both units were getting shots through and creating chances," said Iginla, who has 35 points in his last 26 games. "We found ways to get it to the net. They got two power-play goals too, but our penalty-killing came up big at the end."

The Oilers couldn't capitalize with a man-advantage late in the third, and were denied by Flames goalie Fred Brathwaite with Salo on the bench in the final minute.

Calgary has won three straight against Edmonton and leads the season series 4-1-0. The victory gave the Flames 71 points, five behind San Jose for eighth place in the Western Conference.

The Oilers failed to gain ground on the idle Colorado Avalanche, who lead Edmonton by two points in the Northwest Division

"I definitely think we let up on them," Edmonton's Bill Guerin said. "Our intensity level dropped right off and we didn't get it back until the third period.

"For some reason, we always come up lame against them. They've got a gritty hockey team, so if you lay back they're going to beat you."
