BOX SCORE
LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Nicklas Lidstrom scored Detroit's first goal and set up Sergei Fedorov's short-handed score less than two minutes later, as the Red Wings extended their unbeaten streak to five games with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night over the Los Angeles Kings. Pat Verbeek scored into an empty net in the final minute and Chris Osgood made 23 saves, outdueling Jamie Storr in a matchup of the NHL's highest-scoring teams. The Kings, who haven't been shut out all season and haven't been blanked at home since Nov. 28 of last season, spoiled Osgood's bid with 7:18 remaining. Rookie defenseman Jere Karalahti sped past Kris Draper through the right circle and faked Osgood to the ice before slipping his fifth goal under Osgood's stick with the Kings' 21st shot. Los Angeles, trying to beat Detroit three times in a season for the first time since 1988-89, did not allow a shot by the NHL's most potent offense until more than nine minutes elapsed. But the Red Wings scored on two of their next three shots against Storr, who started for the first time in four games because of Stephane Fiset's groin injury. Storr made 25 saves. Lidstrom, who has tallied Detroit's first goal three times in five games, got his 17th goal at 13:19 after jumping into the play from the blue line. He got a pass in the slot from Mathieu Dandenault, sidestepped Ian Laperriere and used Garry Galley as a screen to beat Storr. The goal was Lidstrom's second in 36 career games against the Kings. The Red Wings were killing a high-sticking penalty to Igor Larionov when Los Angeles surrendered its 12th short-handed goal. Lidstrom got the puck in the Detroit zone and sent it up the boards to Fedorov, who jammed the puck under Storr's stick hand after faking a shot from the left circle. It was Fedorov's 20th goal and second short-handed in two games.
