Sens give Tugger an easy night

KANATA, Ontario (AP) -- Ron Tugnutt had a great view of how the Ottawa Senators dismantled the Carolina Hurricanes.

Carolina's Sean Hill hooks himself a Senator as Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson, front, tries to shake loose.

Tugnutt only needed to make 21 saves Tuesday night as the Senators routed Carolina 5-1.

"We really dominated from start to finish in all aspects of the game," Tugnutt said of Ottawa's victory in front of 16,610 fans at Corel Centre. "It's been a while since our team has played that well for an entire game."

Vaclav Prospal had two goals and Shawn McEachern, Daniel Alfredsson and Marian Hossa also scored for the Senators, who closed within four points of first-place Toronto in the Northeast Division.

The Hurricanes didn't get a shot until 10 minutes into the first period. The Senators, meanwhile, fired a franchise-record 24 shots at the Carolina net in the third period and outshot the Hurricanes 45-22 overall.

"(Carolina) played a great game (on Monday, a 5-2 win against Toronto), so we thought they'd be tired," said Hossa, who also had an assist.

Nolan Pratt had Carolina's only goal.

"I think anytime you play three games in four nights, you start feeling a little fatigued," Carolina left wing Bates Battaglia said. "But every team has to do it and we needed to come out better than we did."

The Senators have won only three of eight games and are winless in five road contests, but improved to 15-8-5-2 at home.

The Hurricanes had won seven of 10 -- after snapping a five-game losing streak -- including winning three straight road contests.

McEachern opened the scoring with 5:08 remaining in the first period, beating goalie Mark Fitzpatrick to a rebound and scoring while falling.

SENS BUY SEATS FOR KIDS
KANATA, Ontario -- Ottawa Senators players have announced they will purchase more than 50 season tickets in section 312 of the Corel Centre to be distributed to underprivileged and disabled children.

"This is an exciting program that will benefit a great number of special children," said Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson. "I'm pleased that we have every Ottawa Senator on side to support this plan."

The "Sens Den" will be specially designed using more than 50 seats in section 312. The club will design a special logo, which will be branded on the concrete pillar behind section 312, and those seats reserved for children.

These season tickets, which are valued at more than $100,000, are also supported by the team's front office.

Prospal leaned around Hurricanes defenseman Sean Hill in the slot and beat Fitzpatrick with 23 seconds left in the period.

It was Fitzpatrick's first NHL game this season. He was called up from Cincinnati of the IHL on Friday after Montreal claimed Eric Fichaud off waivers. He entered the game with a 5-3-1 career record and a 1.97 goals-against average against Ottawa.

"There were one or two goals I wish I had a second chance at," Fitzpatrick said. "Any time you are out of the league for any period, it's a bit of a setback."

Alfredsson beat Fitzpatrick to the short side with 2:12 remaining in the second for his 10th goal and a 3-0 Senators lead.

Pratt replied 1:22 into the third, knocking Andrei Kovalenko's rebound past Tugnutt, but Hossa tapped a loose rebound into the open side at 7:25 for his 20th goal. Prospal completed the scoring with a high backhand shot at 13:58.

Ottawa outshot Carolina 24-6 in the third and 45-22 overall.
