DALLAS (AP) -- At the age of 39, Guy Carbonneau can still muster a burst of speed when necessary.
Carbonneau broke to the net and converted a pass from Brett Hull with 6:44 left to give the Dallas Stars to a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night. Hull got the puck at the left point as Carbonneau skated past speedy Todd Marchant and drove hard through the slot. Carbonneau got his stick down as the puck arrived to beat Oilers goalie Tommy Salo for his sixth goal of the season. "He (Hull) saw me at the blue line," Carbonneau said. "When I hit the red line, I knew what was going to happen and I had to beat Marchant. You see the play in your mind and it was a perfect pass." Hull is primarily known as a scorer, as his 603 career goals will attest. But Hull also has 479 career assists. "A lot of people see Brett Hull as a scorer and a shooter," Carbonneau said. "They tend to forget how good he can pass the puck." Carbonneau's role is mainly as a checker and faceoff specialist, but Carbonneau can score; he has 256 career goals. "I play against him every shift and he does a great job," said Oilers center Doug Weight. "I've got tremendous respect for him. He knows his role and he knows when to get involved in the offense." The Stars also got a 20-save performance from Ed Belfour to remain unbeaten (6-0-2) in their last eight regular-season meetings against Edmonton, and 22-3-3 in the last 28. Since 1993, the Oilers are 1-12-1 against the Stars in Dallas. Dallas wrapped up the season series against Edmonton on Monday night with a 3-0-1 record. All three defeats by the Oilers were by one goal. "It's frustrating for sure," said Oilers left wing Ryan Smyth. "One goal is big, it's worth two points. We've got to fight through that." Said Oilers coach Kevin Lowe: "We had them on their heels, but we weren't able to capitalize. I hope we get a shot at them in the playoffs." Dallas capitalized on a two-man advantage for a 1-0 lead when Mike Modano swept in a rebound at 5:35 of the first period, Modano's 20th. Edmonton tied it at 1 with 3.1 seconds left in the first period on Bill Guerin's power-play goal, a one-timer from the left circle, Guerin has 15 goals. The Stars are 5-2 in their last seven games as they continue to advance in the Western Conference standings. "Tonight had a playoff level of intensity to it," said Stars coach Ken Hitchcock. "It was a whale of a hockey game." Salo made 19 saves for the Oilers. Three of the Dallas' top players are out with injuries: Derian
Hatcher, Joe Nieuwendyk and Jere Lehtinen.
