DALLAS (AP) -- Roman Turek said he needed some luck to beat his former teammates, but the St. Louis Blues goalie was also very good on Friday night.

Turek stopped 19 shots and Lubos Bartecko scored the tiebreaking goal in the second period in the Blues' 3-1 victory over the Dallas Stars.

"Roman played a great game," said Blues defenseman Chris Pronger. "We relied on him. He was like a wall back there for us."

The backup to Ed Belfour in the Stars' run to the 1999 Stanley Cup championship, Turek was making his first appearance at Reunion Arena in an opposing uniform after compiling a 16-3-3 record for Dallas last season.

Turek was on top of his game, and he got some help from the Stars when Brett Hull hit goalposts on scoring chances twice in the third period. Kirk Muller and Guy Carbonneau were also unable to convert on choice scoring opportunities.

"I was lucky on three or four shots," said Turek, 2-0 against Dallas this season since being traded to St. Louis. "But we won and that's it. It's a nice feeling to win here. Every save I made tonight, I got even more confidence."

Belfour made 22 saves as the Stars had their three-game winning streak snapped.

The matchup of Western Conference powers featured tight checking, strong goaltending and plenty of physical play. St. Louis was eliminated by the Stars in the Western Conference semifinals last season, but the Blues have improved themselves, especially with Turek now their No. 1 goalie.

"That was a hard-played, tight game," said Blues coach Joel Quenneville. "We had a hard time against them last year. We got behind early, but we were able to weather that storm. And Roman's been outstanding all year. He's a big part of our team."

Bartecko scored his 11th goal off a goalmouth feed from Michal Handzus at 11:05 of the second period to break the 1-1 tie.

Craig Conroy added an empty-netter with 12.5 seconds left.

The Stars took a 1-0 lead at 5:07 of the first period when Brenden Morrow gloved a high centering pass and beat Turek on the rebound of his own shot for Morrow's sixth goal.

The Blues drew even at 12:53 of the first when defenseman Todd Reirden's shot from the right point beat a screened Belfour for Reirden's third goal.

Dallas is without three of its top players, all out with injuries: defenseman Derian Hatcher, center Joe Nieuwendyk and left wing Jere Lehtinen.

Carbonneau said his team is still in good shape despite the fact that the Stars fell seven points behind the Blues in the conference playoff race.

"Everybody's talking about their great season, but we're missing some guys," Carbonneau said. "We're not that far behind them and we've had injuries all year. Hopefully in a month, month and a half, we'll be getting our team healthy and we'll be a team people will be looking at."
