Predators' luck runs out against Luc's Kings

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Luc Robitaille helped the Los Angeles Kings make it an easy night against the Nashville Predators

Robitaille scored two first-period goals and Stephane Fiset made 34 saves as the Kings cruised to a 6-2 victory Thursday night.

"Luc's a pure goal scorer," Nashville's Tom Fitzgerald said. "If you give him chances to score, he's going to put it in."

With 539 career goals, Robitaille ranks 20th among NHL career goal scoring leaders, two behind Stan Mikita.

With the addition of Robitaille's linemate Ziggy Palffy and a new home rink in the Staples Center, the Kings believe they have a new lease on life this season.

"We're a better team. We know we're a better team," Robitaille said. "We struggled a little bit, we had a lot of injuries. But I think we're back on track now."

Palffy, acquired prior to the season in a trade with the Islanders, spotted Robitaille breaking into the left circle just 1:56 into the game. Palffy now has 26 assists.

After Nashville's Patric Kjellberg tied it 1-1 on a power-play goal, Robitaille connected again to put the Kings back on top.

"It was not a fun night," Fitzgerald said. "It was a very, very horrendous start."

On the play, Robitaille pounced on a loose puck on the left side and snapped a wrist shot past Mike Dunham's stick -- his 11th point in the last 10 games.

The Kings' Marko Tuomainen made it 3-1 at 19:06. Bryan Smolinski scored early in the second to put Los Angeles ahead 4-1. Bob Corkum scored to make it 5-1 at 12:21 of the period.

Kjellberg put a rebound past Fiset to cut the lead to 5-2 at 14:34 of the second. Tomas Vokoun replaced Dunham to start the third period.

Ian Laperriere's unassisted goal made it 6-2.

"This was sort of one of those clunker games," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "We'd been playing pretty well. Today we were a little on the flat side."

Los Angeles has beaten Nashville three straight times dating back to last season. The first three times the teams met, the then-expansion Predators won all three meetings.

The Predators, who had been 3-1-1 in their previous five games, continued to be an unpredictable team.

"Let's face it, it's not an excuse but we're still a younger team that's learning every day what it takes to win," Fitzgerald said. "It just doesn't happen overnight."
