Baxter Bits: Buccaneers vs. Eagles

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Buccaneers head to Philadelphia for the first time since 1995 looking to extend their recent winning ways against the Eagles.

Including playoffs, while the Bucs and the Eagles have split their previous six encounters, Tampa has posted wins in the last two meetings, including a 21-6 triumph on opening day of 1995 at Philadelphia in the last meeting between the teams.

Despite that victory, the Buccaneers are 1-2 lifetime at Veterans Stadium dating back to 1977.

Numbers: Including playoffs, after throwing just one touchdown pass and 10 interceptions (3 returned for scores) during Tampa Bay's 0-5 start in '96, Buccaneers' QB Trent Dilfer has thrown 55 TD passes and 43 INTs (7 returned for scores) in his last 46 outings (24-22). Dilfer has thrown 53 interceptions in his last 51 games, 10 of those returned for touchdowns, including playoffs (1996-99). The Buccaneers have limited the opposition to 300 or fewer yards in 30 of their last 43 regular-season contests dating back to '96. Tampa Bay has forced 18 turnovers in eight wins, eight turnovers in nine losses dating back to '98. The Buccaneers have returned 1,384 kickoffs in their 24-year history (1976-99) and have never scored a touchdown on a kickoff return.

After scoring an NFL-low 161 points in 1998, the Eagles scored 24 points (all in the first half) in Week 1 vs. Arizona. The Eagles have allowed 138 points in nine wins (15.3 avg.), 603 points in 23 losses and a tie (25.1 avg.) dating back to '97.

Things To Look For: It's not easy to give up just over 100 total yards of offense and lose a football game, but Tony Dungy's club was done in by the play of QBs Trent Dilfer and Eric Zeier. The former expects to get the start once again, but Dungy himself might have to take some snaps from center as his superb defensive unit is growing increasingly impatient. Philadelphia's troubled offensive line could have a long day.

Etc.: After losing their first five games in '96 and opening 1-8 under head coach Tony Dungy, the Buccaneers are 24-18 in their last 42 contests dating back to '96 (including 1-1 in playoffs). However, after opening 5-0 in 1997, the Buccaneers are just 14-16 (including playoffs) in their last 30 games. Since '97 (including playoffs), the Bucs are 7-10 vs. NFC Central rivals and 12-6 vs. the rest of the NFL. Tampa Bay is 18-54 on the road in the 1990s (2-6 in '98).

The Eagles have lost 4 straight games dating back to '98...Including playoffs, Eagles are 12-28-1 in their last 41 games after opening 7-2 in '96. Eagles PK Norm Johnson has converted an NFL-record 279 consecutive PATs.
