Rams (6-0) at Titans (5-1)

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Rams make their first appearance at Adelphia Coliseum for this Week 8 showdown. The Titans, who were off last week, will play host in this interconference series for the first time since 1993

The Rams have prevailed in two straight and five of the previous seven meetings between these franchises, including a 28-13 victory over the then-Houston Oilers at the Astrodome in 1993 in the most recent encounter between the clubs. The Rams own a 3-1 road mark in this infrequent series dating back to 1973 (all of those contests were played at Houston's Astrodome).

Numbers: In his last two games, Rams RB Marshall Faulk has carried 34 times for 314 yards and two touchdowns. In '98, since-departed Rams' RB June Henley led the team with 313 yards rushing on 88 carries, with three touchdowns. Rams QB Kurt Warner has thrown 18 touchdown passes and three interceptions in six games in '99 (6-0). In '98, since-departed Rams QBs Tony Banks and Steve Bono combined to throw just 12 touchdown passes and 18 interceptions in 16 games (4-12). In their first six games in '99, the Rams have outscored the opposition a combined 66-9 in the first quarter. In 16 games in '98, Rams were outscored a combined 116-37 in the first quarter

The Rams have scored 333 points in 10 wins, 169 points in 12 losses dating back to '98. St. Louis has scored 34 or more points in five straight games. The Rams have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in six consecutive games. The Rams have forced two or more turnovers in three straight games.

The Titans have limited the opposition to 17 or fewer points in 18 of their last 34 contests dating back to '97. After giving up just five touchdown passes in their first seven games, the Titans have allowed 27 TD passes in their last 15 contests dating back to '98. The Titans have limited the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in three straight games.

Things to look for: Despite their perfect start, the skeptics remain in full force as the Rams apparently still haven't proven that they are a playoff contender. They'll get a real test in the well-rested Titans, who figure to have QB Steve McNair back at the controls but have performed efficiently with Neil O'Donnell. Perhaps the Rams' biggest obstacle in this contest will be the field as they play their first game of '99 on grass.

Etc.: The Rams are 6-0 for the first time since 1985, when they opened 7-0 on their way to a 11-5 record and their last NFC West title, losing the NFC Championship Game at Chicago 24-0. The Rams' six wins in '99 equal or surpass their victory total in eight of their last nine seasons (1990-98), the lone exception being 1995, when they finished 7-9. The Rams are 51-99 in the 1990s, 33-78 vs. NFC teams but 18-21 vs. AFC competition (6-1 dating back to '98).

The Titans have won three straight home games. Tennessee is just 16-22 vs. NFC competition since '90 (2-4 since '98) and just 7-11 vs. NFC teams at home since '90. Since 1995, the Titans are 17-18 at home and 19-16 on the road. The Titans are 11-1 vs. AFC Central rivals, 2-8 vs. the rest of the NFL dating back to '98.
