Baxter Bits: Redskins vs. Jets

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Redskins head to the Meadowlands for the second straight week as the Jets play host in this series for the first time since 1976.

Washington owns a 5-1 edge in the standings and posted a 31-16 Sunday evening triumph at RFK Stadium in the last encounter between the clubs.

The Redskins own a 2-0 mark as visitors in this rare setting, their last road tilt in this series resulting in a 37-16 triumph at Shea Stadium in 1976.

Numbers: Redskins RB Stephen Davis has rushed for an NFL-best 235 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2 games in 1999, running for 100-plus yards in each of those contests. In his three previous seasons (1996-98), Davis rushed for 815 yards and 5 touchdowns in 42 games and had failed to gain 100 or more yards rushing in any of those contests. After scoring just 93 points in their first 7 games (0-7), Redskins have scored 311 points in their last 11 contests (7-4) dating back to '98. The Redskins have allowed 120 or more yards rushing in 13 of their last 18 contests dating back to '98. Since 1993, the Redskins have given up 130 or more yards rushing in 49-of-98 games, 200 or more yards on the ground in 11 of those contests, while limiting the opposition to fewer than 100 yards rushing in just 21 of those 98 games.

Including playoffs, the Jets have allowed just 176 points in 13 wins (17 or fewer points in 10 of those contests) while giving up 184 points in 7 losses in their last 20 games dating back to '98. Including playoffs, the Jets have committed just 16 turnovers in 13 wins, 21 turnovers in 7 losses dating back to '98.

Things To Look For: While the Redskins' defense still leaves a lot to be desired, Washington's revitalized offense is riding high thanks to the 1-2 combination of QB Brad Johnson and RB Stephen Davis. No doubt Jets' head coach Bill Parcells will unleash RB Curtis Martin against a very shaky 'Skins defensive front, but New York's run defense will have to make amends for a very disappointing performance at Buffalo.

Etc.: The Jets are 0-2 for the second straight year and the fourth time in five seasons (1995-99). For only the second time in NFL history, a team will play two consecutive regular-season road games in the same stadium on consecutive weekends; the 1993 Indianapolis Colts visited Giants Stadium on December 5, 1993 to face the Jets, then on December 12, 1993 to face the Giants.

Since 1993, Redskins are 37-60-1 have started nine different quarterbacks (Brad Johnson, as well as since-departed QBs Mark Rypien, Cary Conklin, Rich Gannon, John Friesz, Heath Shuler, Gus Frerotte, Jeff Hostetler, Trent Green) over that span...Redskins are 8-14 vs. AFC teams since 1993 (2-2 in '98). The Jets are 9-19 vs. NFC teams dating back to 1992 (2-2 in '98). Including playoffs, Jets head coach Bill Parcells is 11-7 lifetime vs. the Redskins (11-6 with Giants, 0-1 with Patriots).
