Baxter Bits: Lions vs. Chiefs

By Russell S. Baxter
Special to ESPN.com

The Lions make their first regular-season appearance at Arrowhead Stadium since 1990 as these teams battle in the regular season for just the ninth time ever.

The Chiefs own a 5-3 lead in the series standings and have prevailed in the last two meetings, including a 28-24 triumph at the Silverdome on Thanksgiving Day in 1996 in the most recent encounter between the teams.

The Lions are just 1-3 lifetime at Kansas City, their last regular-season trip to Arrowhead Stadium resulting in a 43-24 loss in 1990.

Numbers: Including playoffs, the Lions have allowed 221 points in 16 victories (17 or fewer points in 12 of those wins) and 518 points in 19 losses dating back to '97. They have forced 35 turnovers (including playoffs) in 16 wins, 18 takeaways in 19 losses dating back to '97.

Including playoffs, the Chiefs have scored 551 points in 21 wins, 204 points in 14 losses dating back to '97. Since 1993 (including playoffs), Chiefs' quarterbacks have thrown 90 touchdown passes compared to just 29 interceptions in 65 victories, while throwing just 32 TD passes and 56 interceptions in 39 defeats. After giving up just 63 points in their first five games (4-1), the Chiefs have allowed 330 points in their last 13 contests (4-9) dating back to '98. The Chiefs have committed 31 turnovers in their last 13 games dating back to '98.

Things To Look For: Just in case anyone thought the Lions' surprising win at Seattle on opening day was a fluke, Bobby Ross' team went out and conquered the Packers last week thanks to some big throws from seonc-year QB Charlie Batch, who has emerged as the team leader. The Chiefs took out their '98 frustrations on the struggling Broncos last week and will need a big effort from their defensive unit once again.

Etc.: The Lions are 2-0 for the first time since 1993. They are 18-13 vs. AFC teams since '91 (1-0 in '99), this after going 9-32 in interconference games from 1979-90. Since 1997 (including playoffs), the Lions are 16-19 under head coach Bobby Ross, 11-7 vs. NFC Central rivals and just 5-12 vs. the rest of the NFL. Since 1989, Chiefs are 29-10 vs. NFC teams (0-1 in '99).
