Underwood ruled incompetent to stand trial

ESPN.com news services

DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Dimitrius Underwood has been found mentally incompetent to stand trial on charges he robbed a man in a wheelchair.

The finding came from a Dallas County jury Thursday.

Underwood was charged in November with one count of robbery and an assault count for allegedly punching an Irving police officer in an altercation.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports a magistrate has ordered Underwood transferred from a Dallas County jail to the Vernon campus of the North Texas State Hospital. That's after a series of weekly evaluations by a court-ordered psychiatrist.

Dallas County Magistrate Steven L. Halsey says Underwood will return to Dallas County to stand trial after he recovers.

Underwood has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The Philadelphia-area native played at Michigan State before he became Minnesota's first-round pick in the 1999 NFL draft. The Cowboys picked him up a year later, but he was cut later on.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
