Broken leg finishes McCaffrey's season

Associated Press

DENVER -- Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey will miss the rest of the season after breaking his left leg while making a one-handed catch in Denver's 31-20 victory over the New York Giants on Monday night.

McCaffrey, who caught a team-record 101 passes last season, was injured when he was hit hard by New York safety Shaun Williams with about 10 minutes left in the third quarter.

McCaffrey, who had six catches for 94 yards, was later admitted to Swedish Medical Center, where he was in good condition with a fractured leg. The Broncos said McCaffrey will have surgery and is expected to be sidelined for six months.

McCaffrey immediately grabbed his left leg and remained on the ground for several minutes before being taken from the field on a maintenance vehicle. Replays were graphic, showing McCaffrey's leg breaking as it whipped into Williams body.

The crowd, accustomed to McCaffrey bouncing back from big hits, chanted "Ed-die" as he lay on the field.

McCaffrey teamed with Rod Smith to form the NFL's most productive receiving tandem in 2000. Smith caught 100 passes for 1,602 yards and McCaffrey had 1,317 yards. They were the second teammates in NFL history with at least 100 catches in a season.

Without McCaffrey, the Broncos will turn to veteran Eddie Kennison, who signed as a free agent during the offseason. Kennison did not have a catch before McCaffrey was injured.
