EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Rick Mirer was benched as New York Jets quarterback Sunday by coach Bill Parcells, with Ray Lucas
making his first NFL start.

Parcells hinted during the week he might make a change at the
position, which has been in flux since Vinny Testaverde tore his
Achilles' tendon in the season opener. Mirer, acquired Aug. 20, was
slow to learn the offense and was coming off a weak performance
last Monday night against Jacksonville. He was demoted to third
string, behind punter Tom Tupa, for the game with Indianapolis.
Lucas, in his third NFL season, generally has played on special
teams. He received about half of the snaps in practice during the
week. Lucas has appeared in nine games at quarterback for the Jets,
but only sporadically. He has not played quarterback this year.
