ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands (Ticker) -- Freshman guard Kelly
Mazzante scored 24 points and Maren Walspeth added 14, leading
Penn State (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) to an 86-52 romp over No. 10 Louisiana
State in the consolation game of the Paradise Jam Classic.
Lisa Shepherd had 11 points and four steals, Rashana Barnes
scored 10 points and freshman Courtney Upshaw grabbed 10
rebounds for the Nittany Lions (3-2).
Doneeka Hodges scored 15 points, Marie Ferdinand 13 and Roneeka
Hodges added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers (2-3), who had
just seven players available.
Penn State, which lost the nation's assist leader in Helen
Darling and the 16th best shot-blocker in Andrea Garner from a
30-5 team that went to the Final Four, held LSU to 30 percent
shooting (10-of-33) in the first half and built a 42-22 lead.
The Nittany Lions hit at a 59 percent clip (16-for-27) and were
6-for-8 from 3-point range before the break. They disrupted the
Tigers' offense with 12 steals, including three apiece by
Mazzante and Katrena Carr.
