LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) -- Texas Tech's defensive heat proved to be the perfect cure for a chilly December night.

Lamar found itself on the receiving end of the Lady Raiders' (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, No. 7 AP) relentless defensive pressure Wednesday night as Tech limited the Lady Cardinals to 16-of-51 shooting en route to an 85-41 victory.

"I thought we looked a little bit ragged at the first of the game, but after we settled in, I felt we played pretty well and made some good choices," said coach Marsha Sharp of Texas Tech (7-0).

"We wanted to continue to improve our offense and make some good decisions in it and find easy shots. As the game went on, we did a little better job at that."

Plenette Pierson led the Lady Raiders with 21 points. Many of her points came on easy shots inside as Tech continually worked the ball around the perimeter before moving it inside to Pierson.

"I need to improve on my free throws," said Pierson, who was 5-of-9 from the foul line. "But that all comes in time with experience in the game. I think my defense is getting a little better as I play more and more. My game is coming all together now."

Texas Tech is 7-0 for the first time since winning its first nine in the 1992-93 season on the way to the national championship.

The Lady Raiders scored 16 of the game's first 19 points and limited Lamar to just 12 points in the first half on 5-of-25 shooting. Tech built a 38-12 advantage by halftime. Lamar (4-4) also had 12 turnovers.

Lamar, scoreless for a 10-minute stretch during the first half, got no closer than 25 in the second half.

Melinda Schmucker-Pharies added 13 points for Texas Tech, and Keitha Dickerson had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Niki McKissick and Talia Goudy each scored seven points for Lamar, which committed 26 turnovers.
