PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Tasha Pointer hit six foul shots in the final 1:34 as No. 13 Rutgers hung on to beat Pittsburgh 58-52 Wednesday night. The Scarlet Knights (4-2) built a 24-point lead midway through the second half, then survived a barrage of 3-pointers and a 24-1 run by Pittsburgh (4-2) in the Big East Conference opener for both teams. Rutgers used a 13-2 run to take a 51-27 lead with 9:49 to play before the Panthers, who had rallied in the second half to win twice in their first five games, began their comeback. Switching to a four-guard offense, the Panthers hit four 3-pointers in a 21-1 run that trimmed the lead to three with 1:59 to play. Pittsburgh fouled Pointer to get the ball back three times, but the Rutgers point guard was perfect on six attempts to keep the Panthers at bay. Pointer led Rutgers with 12 points while Christina Fowler added 10. Gina Montesano had 13 points, Monique Toney 12 and Nickeia Morris 10 for the Panthers.
