RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- No. 6 North Carolina State easily overcame a slow start against Wake Forest.

Kaayla Chones had 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Wolfpack beat the Deacons 74-54 on Friday night.

"We started very slowly," N.C. State coach Kay Yow said. "Our movement wasn't very good and we just weren't in synch. At halftime we concentrated on simplifying our offense and that helped some."

Tynesha Lewis added 12 points, and Monica Bates had 10 for N.C. State (7-0 overall, 2-0 ACC), which hit just eight of its first 22 shots and ended the game with a season-high 23 turnovers.

Summer Erb, who sat out most of the second half because of four fouls, finished with a season-low six points.

Alisha Mosley led Wake Forest (1-4, 0-1) with 10 points. Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick had 11 rebounds for the Deacons, helping them get 15 second-chance points.

The Wolfpack had two 10-0 runs in the final 6:51, while Wake Forest missed 14 of its last 18 shots.

"N.C. State just has a lot of weapons and a lot of depth, and that had a lot to do with how the game ended," Wake Forest coach Charlene Curtis said. "We got tired and they just kept putting in fresh people."

Bates scored six straight points in 1:18 to key the first Wolfpack run. Chones and Erb capped it with layups to give N.C. State a 61-44 lead with 4:16 to play.

"Coach Yow told us at halftime we had to get better movement. That was the number one thing," Chones said. "Just moving can get you into the offense."

The Wolfpack hit 13 of their last 16 free throws.
