PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) -- The dynasty is over, and Stanford's once nearly unbeatable women's basketball team is not even ranked these days. But the Cardinal remain a dangerous team, especially at home in Maples Pavilion.

Bethany Donaphin had a career-high 26 points and Lauren St. Clair hit four of her five 3-pointers in the second half as Stanford upset Iowa State (No. 7 ESPN/USA Today; No. 6 AP) 95-82 Sunday, the Cardinal's second big early-season upset in as many years.

"This was a huge win for us," Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. "Different teams give you different problems, and we were able to solve this puzzle."

Donaphin hit a series of short turnaround jumpers while St. Clair and Milena Flores continually hurt Iowa State (1-1) from the perimeter.

St. Clair had 17 points and Flores had 19 points and nine assists for the Cardinal (2-0), the only team to defeat national champion Purdue last season.

"The middle of the zone was pretty open, I was loving that spot," Donaphin said. "It was a good spot to score or to kick the ball back out again."

Megan Taylor had 23 points and Stacy Frese had 15 of her 18 points in the second half for the Cyclones, who are opening their season with a three-game road trip that concludes Tuesday at San Francisco.

"We didn't play today like we were one of the top teams in the nation," Frese said. "We just didn't play hard enough."

Leading 37-34 at halftime, the Cardinal extended their lead to 11 points on St. Clair's three 3-pointers and a pair of baskets by Donaphin. A three-point play by Donaphin and two 3-pointers by Flores made it 61-49 with 14 minutes left.

Iowa State never got closer than four points the rest of the way, despite 11 points in the final minutes by Frese. The Cyclones were outrebounded 41-27 by the Cardinal, who were led by Donaphin's nine rebounds.

Stanford used a 12-0 run late in the first half to take a lead it never relinquished.

Trailing 28-23, the Cardinal held the Cyclones scoreless for more than three minutes while taking a 35-28 lead. Jamie Carey hit a 3-pointer near the start of the run and Donaphin had five straight points, including a three-point play.

"That was about three minutes of the worst substituting I've ever done," Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said. "When we subbed, we didn't get the same type of defensive pressure."
