UCLA's Martin held to eight points

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Elisa Aguilar scored 23 points and George Washington held off a rally to beat UCLA 79-72 on Friday in the first round of the women's NCAA tournament Mideast Regional.

UCLA (17-11) trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half but continuously chipped away at the George Washington lead.

The 10th-seeded Bruins cut it to single digits on LaCresha Flannigan's two free throws with 12:40 left that made it 52-43. UCLA later went on a 13-4 run, closing to 62-60 with 6:37 left on Janae Hubbard's two free throws.

UCLA's comeback fell apart with seventh-seeded George Washington (26-5) leading 66-64 with 4:20 left. Starr Jefferson hit two free throws, UCLA botched a fast-break opportunity and Aguilar hit a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 71-64. Aguilar added two free throws, and UCLA couldn't overcome the deficit in the closing seconds.

Hubbard scored 15 points to lead the Bruins, Nicole Kaczmarski scored 13 and Maylana Martin grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 10 points.

Petra Dubovcova scored 18 for the Colonials in a sloppy game that featured 47 turnovers.
