CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Mississippi State coach Sharon Fanning has taken the coaching cliche of one game at a time all the way to the Southeastern Conference title game. "Y'all get bored with what I'm saying. We take it one day at a time. I don't even know what the game time is tomorrow," Fanning said after her Lady Bulldogs (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today, No. 17 AP) beat No. 2 Georgia 62-61 on Saturday to reach the championship game for the first time.
The Lady Bulldogs (23-6) will play Tennessee (No. 3 ESPN/USA Today, No. 2 tie, AP) in the championship game Sunday. Tennessee beat Vanderbilt 61-53 on Saturday night. Nitra Perry scored all 12 of her points in the second half, including two free throws with 1:42 left to put Mississippi State ahead to stay. Georgia (29-3) had a chance after Tawana McDonald blocked Perry's shot with 13 seconds left. Kelly Miller inbounded the ball with 8.2 seconds left to McDonald, took a return pass and then clanked a 12-foot jumper off the rim. "I didn't do a good job of drawing it," Georgia coach Andy Landers said. "They didn't do a good job of running it. It wasn't very effective. It was a total screwup. I'll take credit. I've got three more years on my contract." Mississippi State, which had trailed by as much as eight in the second half, rebounded the ball and ran out the final seconds to end Georgia's 15-game winning streak. Georgia had been trying to win its first tournament title since 1986 and thought it had the perfect combination with the Miller twins, Kelly and Coco. Both teams had trouble shooting Saturday, and the twins were among the worst. Kelly Miller was 5-of-18 for 13 points, Coco Miller 5-of-12 for 12 points. Landers didn't sound worried about his Lady Bulldogs' first loss since Jan. 2. "We're not going to go home, take the hood off the car and break the engine down. This is a very good basketball team. I've lost no confidence in them. If anything we have a chance to learn a very valuable lesson," Landers said. "That is you may have to play a little bit harder on the offensive end to get the results that were easier to get earlier (in the season)." Mississippi State, playing its third game in as many days, looked tired for much of the game and didn't start clicking until Angela Harris' layup tied it at 51 with 4:56 left. The Lady Bulldogs took their first lead since late in the first half on a three-point play by LaToya Thomas with 2:43 remaining. The teams swapped the lead three times with four ties in the final 4:56. Georgia's luck was summed up when Coco Miller saw a jumper roll around and fall out down the stretch. Thomas, the SEC's leading scorer, led Mississippi State with 19 points. Perry finished with 12, Cynthia Hall had 12 and Harris 10. Georgia led by as much as 44-36 at the 8:56 mark on a layup by Coco Miller. But then Thomas finally wore down senior center Angie Ball with three quick fouls. She connected on a three-point play and then made two free throws within the next minute. McDonald finished with 12 for Georgia, and Angie Ball and Deana Nolan each had 10.
