CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Lauren Rice accomplished something Monday night that she'd never done in four years at Duke -- she won a game at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Rice tied her season high with 17 points and Duke (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) held Clemson scoreless over the final 2:59 en route to a 59-44 victory Monday night.
"My seniors said to me during shoot-around today that we had never won here," Duke coach Gail Goestenkors said. "I had not realized that, so I'm particularly glad for the seniors."
Clemson (16-10, 7-7) closed within six at 50-44 on Erin Batth's layup with 2:59 left, but Duke (22-4, 11-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) held the Tigers scoreless after that.
But Clemson's shooting woes weren't limited to the final
minutes. Duke held Clemson to just 23.1 percent from the field, and the Tigers were 1-for-9 from 3-point range.
"Duke is a very well-coached basketball team," Clemson coach Jim Davis said. "They were playing us soft, goading us into taking shots that we don't usually take. We're not a patient team."
Duke shot 38.3 percent for the game.
"It was a very ugly game," Goestenkors said.
Before the final stretch, the Blue Devils never led by more than 11. Krista Gingrich's 3-pointer gave Duke a 38-27 with 13:10 left.
Clemson used a 13-7 run over the next 6:54 to close within five at 45-40, the closest margin of the second half. Duke's Georgia Schweitzer's ended the run with a 3-pointer from the right wing, then added a free throw to give Duke a nine-point lead.
Duke's missed free throws allowed Clemson to stay in the game. The Blue Devils missed seven free throws in the second half and hit just 16-of-25 for the game.
Schweitzer added 14 points for Duke. Batth led Clemson with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Chrissy Floyd scored 10 points.
