Frese held to three points as Wildcats roll

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) -- Kristen Rethman had 15 points on five 3-pointers to help Kansas State beat Iowa State (No. 9 ESPN/USA Today; No. 8 AP) 69-63 for its first win against a ranked opponent in five tries this season.

Kansas State (11-13, 4-7 Big 12) tied a season high with 12 3-pointers to win its second straight conference game after losing five in a row.

Iowa State (18-4, 9-2) dropped its second Big 12 conference road game since beating Oklahoma 71-56 to gain a share of first place in the conference. Iowa State senior Stacy Frese was held to just three points after going 1-for-13 from the field in 37 minutes. She was 1-for-6 from 3-point range.

Seven of Kansas State's first 10 field goals in the second half were 3-pointers as the Wildcats led by four with 6:36 to go. But Iowa State took its first lead since the opening bucket when Desiree Francis made it 60-58 with 4:14 remaining.

The Wildcats came back and Angie Finkes nailed a jumper with 39 seconds left to give her team the lead for good.

Kim Woodlee Finkes and Nicky Ramage each scored 12 points.

Francis led the Cyclones with 20 points and Angie Welle had 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Wildcats went on an early 11-2 run and led be as many as 13 in the first half. But the Cyclones made three consecutive 3-pointers to cut the lead to one with 1:57 to go.

Rethman answered with a three of her own to put the Wildcats up by four and Kansas State led 31-29 at halftime.
