CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Renee Robinson made two free throws with four-tenths of a second remaining Sunday and Virginia (No. 21 ESPN/USA Today; No. 22 AP) barely avoided another stunning loss to Arkansas State, beating the Lady Indians 57-55. Virginia (19-6), which lost as the No. 8 team on the Indians' home floor last season, twice went ahead in the final 70 seconds, and each time Arkansas State pulled even until Robinson was fouled with 0.4 seconds remaining. Robinson swished both shots to give the Cavaliers their 15th victory in the last 17 games. Arkansas State (14-6), which didn't get to the arena until an hour before tipoff after getting lost on the two-mile trip from its hotel, lost in a week when it also will have to play fourth-ranked Louisiana Tech twice. Robinson had only one field goal when she drove and banked in an 8-footer with 1:09 to play to give Virginia a 53-51 lead. But the Lady Indians answered on Tanisha Johnson's basket with 46.8 seconds remaining. Robinson then gave Virginia the lead again, driving into the middle as the shot clock wound down and rolling a scoop off the glass and in with 19.7 seconds to play, but the Lady Indians countered again on Jolie McKeirnan's putback. That came with 7.7 seconds to go. Then Robinson, taking the inbounds pass, drove down the right side of the court and along the baseline, her shot not coming close as the clock wound down, but the officials belatedly called the two-shot foul. Virginia played the first half without scoring and rebounding leader Schuye LaRue, benched for an unspecified violation of team rules, and trailed 30-28 despite a career-high 12 points by Dean'na Mitchelson, LaRue's replacement. Mitchelson finished with 12 to lead Virginia and Telisha Quarles had 11.
Julie Hagood led Arkansas State with 15 points and Johnson and
Keeshia Evans added 10 each. Johnson also had five assists and four
rebounds.
