PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rutgers matched its season-high for
points allowed in a game, but the Scarlet Knights (No. 11 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, No. 10 AP) still won their fifth consecutive game, an 81-68 win over Providence in the Big East on Wednesday.
Rutgers (16-4, 8-2) entered the game ranked fifth in the nation
in scoring defense (52.9 ppg).

Karlita Washington scored a season-high 20 points for Rutgers,
which played without lead guard Tasha Pointer, who has a sprained
ankle. Shawnetta Stewart scored 16 points and Usha Gilmore added
14.
Meghan Hinds scored 17 to lead Providence (9-12, 4-7). Monika
Roberts added 10.
Rutgers outrebounded Providence 46-35 and scored 23
second-chance points.
Roberts scored the game's first basket, but Rutgers then went on
a 10-0 run. Gilmore scored seven points during the spurt, including
six on two 3-pointers.
Just when it appeared Rutgers would break the game open, Hinds
made three 3-pointers. The last cut Rutgers' lead to 22-21 with
4:30 left in the first half.
That was as close as Providence would get in the half, as
Rutgers outscored the Lady Friars 14-2 for a 36-23 lead at
halftime.
Washington scored eight points in the first eight minutes of the
second half as Rutgers moved to a 56-33 lead, its largest of the
game.
Providence's Chrissy Vozab, who finished with 10 points, led a
rally in which the Friars pulled to 72-63 with 2:37 remaining. But
Dani Trippany scored five of her 10 points down the stretch to
clinch the victory.
