LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Iowa State forward Desiree Francis gave Kansas a little incentive. "She had said that we were a little cocky," said Kansas forward Jaclyn Johnson, who scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds Saturday as the Jayhawks (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, unranked AP) beat the sixth-ranked Cyclones 58-49. "We don't think of ourselves as a cocky team and we didn't like that. It's not respectful." Iowa State (15-3, 6-1 Big 12) committed 10 turnovers in the first 11 minutes of the second half. Kansas (14-5, 5-2) went ahead by 14 points after leading 29-25 at the half. "We've been working on our transition defense and we did a good job picking it up today," Kansas coach Marian Washington said. "For at least 35 minutes of the game we did exactly that. We stayed very intense throughout the game." Iowa State had been averaging 80 points a game to lead the Big 12, but shot just 30 percent. "They made it hard for us to get some shots in the second half and we turned it over a little too much," Cyclone coach Bill Fennelly said. "We had a couple of looks at the basket that didn't go down." Angie Welle led Iowa State with 13 points, but scored only three in the second half. "Our defense was tenacious," Johnson said. "We were all over the place and everybody wanted it." The Cyclones started the game by missing 10 of their first 11 shots, and started the second half by missing nine of their first 10. The Cyclones rallied with a 10-2 run midway through the second half to get within 45-39, but that was as close as they came. Suzi Raymant hit a 3-pointer to snuff out the rally and start the Jayhawks on a 6-0 run. Raymant and Jennifer Jackson each had 10 points for Kansas. Stacy Frese also had 13 points each for Iowa State. The Cyclones totals of 25 points in the first half and 24 points in the second half were their lowest of the season. Kansas was not much better from the field, shooting 32 percent as the Jayhawks had their worst shooting day of the season. Lynn Pride was held to nine points, and Brooke Reves, who averages 13 points a game, was held scoreless. | ALSO SEE Womens College Basketball Scoreboard
