TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Janell Burse scored 19 points and Tulane (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today; No. 21 AP) overcame a 17-point second-half deficit to beat South Florida 84-78 Sunday.

Trailing 65-48 with just more than 11 minutes left, Tulane outscored South Florida 21-3 and took a 69-68 lead with 3:42 remaining. Burse had nine points during the run.

Sarah Goree's jumper and Grace Daley's fastbreak layup sparked a 6-0 spurt that put Tulane ahead 79-73 with 1:01 left. The Green Wave (16-2, 5-2 Conference USA) won its second consecutive game after dropping two straight.

Monica Echeverria had 23 points and Aiya Shepard added 19 for South Florida (10-8, 1-6), which has lost seven in a row. The Bulls were looking for their first win against a ranked opponent since beating Tulane 80-71 in the final game of the 1996-97 season.

South Florida used an 8-0 run starting the second half for a 53-36 lead with 17 minutes left. Tulane had four turnovers and an offensive foul in its initial six possessions before Goree hit a short jumper almost four minutes into the half.

Echeverria had 15 first-half points, helping South Florida take a 45-36 lead.

Despite committing eight turnovers on its first 15 possessions, Shepard's three-point play and a 3-pointer by Lindsey Smith gave South Florida a 19-14 lead with 12:46 left in the half.

The seven-game losing skid is the longest in South Florida coach Jerry Ann Winters' 16 seasons at the Division I level.
