We'll be tracking the top six players on our weekly Heisman Poll each Saturday. Here is how those six players performed on Saturday. The ESPN.com Heisman Poll is voted on by Lee Corso, Todd Christensen, Bill Curry, Rod Gilmore, Mike Gottfried, Kirk Herbstreit, Mel Kiper, Jr., John Mackovic and Gene Wojciechowski.
MICHAEL VICK -- VIRGINIA TECH |
| |
| Vick | Breaking it down: After being sacked eight times for minus-60 yards, he provided the clincher via a 55-yard specialty to turn back a Syracuse team hell bent on avenging last year's 62-0 pasting by the Hokies. On a day when nobody distiguished themselves to voters, Vick turned in the day's best highlight.
Saturday's Performance: Beat Syracuse, 22-14
Passing: 6 of 11, 75 yards; 0 TD; 0 INT
Rushing: 16 carries, 9 yards
Season Statistics
Passing: 61 of 118, 943 yards; 7 TDs, 4 INTs
Rushing: 86 carries, 550 yards; 7 TDs

ERIC CROUCH -- NEBRASKA |
| |
| Crouch | Breaking it down: Quit pitching the ball, Eric! While his backfield mate went over 100 yards -- many coming after gathering the toss on the option -- the Heisman hopeful was quiet in just a quarter of work. Unselfish to a fault? Perhaps. But next week's showdown will say enough about his worth -- both to voters and the Huskers' national championship hopes.
Saturday's Performance: Beat Baylor, 59-0
Passing: 2 of 6, 23 yards; 0 TD, 0 INT
Rushing: 5 carries, 46 yards; 1 TD
Season Statistics
Passing: 47 of 96, 775 yards; 9 TD, 5 INTs
Rushing: 96 carries, 576 yards; 10 TDs
|
CHRIS WEINKE -- FLORIDA STATE |
| |
| Weinke | Breaking it down: After throwing for 500 yards a week ago, this output won't turn any heads. But he still leads the country in TD passes and yards. Oh, and he too was wearing a baseball hat by the start of the fourth quarter.
Saturday's Performance: Beat Virginia, 37-3
Passing: 16 of 28, 274 yards; 2 TDs, 1 INT
Season Statistics
Passing: 180 of 287, 2,784 yards; 22 TDs, 7 INT
|
DREW BREES -- PURDUE |
| |
| Brees | Breaking it down: A day against Wisconsin usually means 400-plus yards ... in a loss. This time, Brees came out of Madison with fewer yards, but a victory and the Rose Bowl still within reach. We think he'll take the tradeoff come January.
Saturday's Performance: Beat Wisconsin, 30-24 (OT)
Passing: 21 of 43, 274 yards; 2 TDs, 0 INT
Rushing: 11 carries, 74 yards; 1 TD
Season Statistics
Passing: 201 of 336, 2,443 yards; 21 TDs, 4 INTs
Rushing: 74 carries, 423 yards; 4 TDs
|
JOSH HEUPEL -- OKLAHOMA |
| |
| Heupel | Breaking it down: OK, we're starting to believe the Heupel as well. And why not? The fourth-ranked Sooners are unbeaten heading into their showdown with No. 1 Nebraska this week mainly because of their quarterback, who leads the nation in completion percentage (68.5) and has run for five TDs. He's a little late to the party, but could end up the guest of honor by season's end.
Saturday's Performance: Did not play
Season Statistics
Passing: 144 of 210, 1,894 yards; 11 TDs, 4 INTs
|
WOODROW DANTZLER -- CLEMSON |
| |
| Dantzler | Breaking it down: Won't get credit for Willie Simmon's numbers (4 TDs, 228 yards passing) after going down with a bruised ankle in the second quarter of the Tigers' eventual comeback victory. If injury lingers, he'll be left behind quickly by others on this list.
Saturday's Performance: Beat North Carolina, 38-24
Passing: 4 of 7, 68 yards; 0 TDs, 0 INT
Rushing: 8 carries, 22 yards; 0 TD
Season Statistics
Passing: 95 of 154, 1,339 yards; 9 TDs, 4 INT
Rushing: 130 carries, 841 yards; 12 TDs
