Busy bye week

(Editor's note: Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops will file a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season. For more on the Sooners, visit the official Oklahoma site.)

Oct. 13, 1999

During the bye week, we'll be identifying areas we need to improve on: fundamentals, assignment responsibilities and going back over the plays that hurt us.

THE FULL DOSE OF DIARIES
USC's Travis Claridge:
Shooting for four
Georgia Tech's Joe Hamilton:
Leader of the pack
Miami's André King:
Putting on a good show
UCLA's Danny Farmer:
Bowl-bound Bruins?
Oregon State's Ken Simonton:
All about execution
Oregon's Reuben Droughns:
Resting the ribs
Ole Miss' Todd Wade:
Ready for 'Bama
Wyoming's Jarnagin, Demos:
Bad loss in Laramie

We're also really trying to concentrate on improving all areas of what we're doing -- being in the wrong places when we call a defensive lineup, calling a certain pass protection or blocking the wrong guys or running the wrong routes.

We'll go back and look at all the games thus far and see what areas we need to polish.

We've got six games left. We knew coming into the Texas game (a 38-28 loss) that win or lose, it wasn't the end. But we are going to continue to improve as we go throughout the year and realize we've got a lot to improve on. This was just one game and we've got six more, so we're going to make the most of them.

After we took a 17-0 lead, I think Texas made more plays than we did. For a while there, defensively we were holding up, forcing some field goals. Then on two plays near the end of the half, we gave up a long pass and then gave up a corner route for a touchdown. Then it was tied up, and it was just a matter of making plays.
