Watch that Hokie offense

 By Lee Corso
Special to ESPN.com

With the season starting in just a few days, here are a few things to consider and remember:

  • Virginia Tech's offense will finish among the top five in the nation. The Hokies have 10 starters back on offense, and Michael Vick and Andre Davis are tremendous talents. Don't be surprised if the Hokies score 45 points in the opener against Georgia Tech.

  • Alabama was 10-3 last year, won the SEC title and enters the season ranked third in the country, but not so fast: The Tide lost two special leaders in Shaun Alexander and Chris Samuels.

    Alex Brown
Florida's Alex Brown had 13 sacks last season and will lead a dangerous Gator defense.
  • All four teams that beat Florida last year were in the Top Ten. Watch out for the Gators this season. They still have a tough schedule, with games at Tennessee, at Florida State and at Georgia. But their defense, with Alex Brown and company, will be much better.

  • Florida State has finished in the top five 13 straight years and has played for the national title two years in a row, Nebraska has won three national titles in the past six years, and Wisconsin has won three Rose Bowls in the past seven years.

  • Miami has yet to finish in the top 10 since 1994; probation killed the 'Canes. Look for them to end that top-10 streak this year.

  • Georgia is 1-17 against Florida and Tennessee since 1990; I suggest that Georgia tries something different in its preparation for the Gators and Vols this year: Yo, anything!

  • Since 1997, only a handful of teams have won more games than Michigan. The Wolverines have won 32 games in the past three years. In Michigan's storied history, that's the best three-year win total since Fielding Yost won 33 in 1903-05.

Lee Corso's colum will appear every Wednesday during the college football season.
