PROVO, Utah -- Lucas Staley, BYU All-American running back, has broken his leg and will miss the Cougars' (12-0) regular-season finale at Hawaii on Saturday.
Team orthopedic surgeon Kurt Kimball said Sunday that Staley had broken his left fibula, the smaller of the two calf bones, in a Saturday game.
BYU's head trainer said it was too early to say if Staley would be able to play in the Cougars' scheduled game at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 31.
He will be in a walking cast for at least a week, and unable to play for between three and six weeks.
Staley is one of three finalists for the Doak Walker Award, which honors the nation's top running back. The winner of this year's award will be announced on Thursday.
With Saturday's game at Mississippi State tied at 38-38, Staley led BYU into scoring position on five carries, accounting for 33 of the Cougars' 63 yards in the game-winning drive.
After a six yard run, MSU's Richard Ball landed on Staley's leg, causing the injury.
Staley finished the night with a game-high 149 yards on 28 carries.
Staley, a junior from Tualatin, Ore., ranks second in the nation in rushing, averaging 143.3 yards per game. The seventh-ranked Cougars have a perfect 11-0 record for the season.
Staley leads the nation in scoring, averaging 15.4 points per game. |
