ARLINGTON, Va. -- Miami remained No. 1 but Tennessee used its stunning victory over Florida to climb two spots to No. 2 in the latest ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll released Sunday. Miami (11-0) survived a trip to Virginia Tech, hanging on for a 26-24 win over the 16th-ranked Hokies. The Hurricanes, who secured a berth in the Rose Bowl and the right to compete for the national championship, received 59 of the 60 first-place votes and lead the way with 1,499 points. Miami's opponent Jan. 3 might be Tennessee, which put itself in position to win a second national title in four years by winning in Gainesville for the first time since 1971. Travis Stephens ran for 226 yards and two touchdowns as the Volunteers (10-1) edged the Gators 34-32. Tennessee's 1,419 points are 70 more than Oregon (10-1). The Ducks kept their slim national championship hopes alive with a 17-14 victory over rival Oregon State. Nebraska (11-1), which was off, moved up two spots to fourth. Colorado (10-2) might have been the biggest winner of the weekend, moving from 10th to fifth following its 39-37 triumph over Texas. The Buffaloes secured a berth in the Bowl Championship Series with the win and put to rest any thoughts that their rout of Nebraska two weeks ago was a fluke. Florida (9-2) is sixth with Atlantic Coast Conference champion Maryland (10-1) seventh. Brigham Young (12-0) received the other first-place vote and Saturday completed a perfect regular season with a thrilling win over Mississippi State. But the Cougars actually fell from seventh into an eighth-place tie with Illinois (10-1). Texas (10-2) rounds out the top 10. Oklahoma (10-2), Stanford (9-2), Washington State (9-2), South Carolina (8-3) and Michigan (8-3) complete the top 15. Of those teams, only Stanford was in action Saturday as the Cardinal routed San Jose State, 41-14. Syracuse (9-3) is 17th, followed by Georgia (8-3), Washington (8-3) and Louisiana State (8-3). Fresno State (11-2) remained 21st despite crushing Utah State 70-21. Louisville (10-2) moved up a spot to 22nd with Ohio State (7-4), Florida State (7-4) and Marshall (10-2) rounding out the top 25. Florida State returned to the poll after beating Georgia Tech, 28-17. Dropping out of the poll was Auburn, which lost to LSU, 27-14, in a matchup for the Southeastern Conference West Division title. The final BCS standings Dec. 9 determine which teams play for the national title. The AP media poll and the coaches poll are part of the BCS formula, which also uses computer ratings and strength of schedule to come up with its top teams. |
