BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech, ESPN and the Black Coaches
Association proposed Monday that Dec. 1 should be the makeup date
for the BCA Classic. However, Georgia Tech hasn't decided whether
it wants to play the game.
Severe thunderstorms and lightning forced game and school
officials to postpone the game Sunday night at Lane Stadium just as the
teams were lined up for the opening kickoff.
Rick Giles, president of the organization that produces the game
for the coaches' group, said officials decided to release the
tentative date after being inundated with questions about a makeup
game.
If the schools do not play, the financial loss in ticket
receipts and revenues from sponsorships could amount to more than
$2 million, Giles said.
Mike Stamus, sports information director at Georgia Tech, said
Monday night the school hasn't decided whether to make up the game
after playing rival Georgia on Nov. 25. It wasn't immediately clear
if the Yellow Jackets were legally obligated to meet Virginia Tech
on a different date.
Georgia Tech athletic director Dave Braine said Sunday night
that he wasn't inclined to schedule a makeup game.
"I don't think it's a good idea," he said. "Our reasons for
playing a preseason game were because we had an inexperienced
quarterback. He will have 11 games by then."
The Yellow Jackets, seeking to replace Heisman runner-up Joe
Hamilton, were hoping to get their first look at George Godsey
against the Hokies.
Now, Godsey will make his first college start Saturday against
Central Florida.
